Preview from a recent shoot. How amazing is this makeup? Time and time again, I am blown away by Emma’s amazing skills. She even admitted to me pre-shoot that she was a little worried, for she had not learnt how to air-brush with makeup yet on her college course, and felt that this would be the most successful technique needed for our shoot… well, it just goes to show that whatever you throw at this girl, she can blow you away with her abilities. I know that she is already in high demand, but I’ll say it anyway: I strongly recommend that every photographer, designer and stylist in Derby, send her an email, give her a call, organise a shoot together. She won’t let you down.

She’s also the cheeriest person I know, which is a definite bonus!

Everyone knows the importance of experimentation, especially when trying to work your way into a creative industry. I prefer to carry around a little moleskine, jotting down any ideas that spring up on me unexpectedly, sometimes drawing sketches to better explain my ideas than words ever could. I’m fortunate to have met so many creative individuals since I began building my portfolio, so long ago, and so I have reached a point where I have a wide network of people who are willing to help me bring my ideas to life. Equally, of course, i tend to step in to help them with their ideas also.

This photo shoot was an opportunity for myself and my makeup artist Emma to go crazy with makeup and push the boat out a little more than we tend to. The idea came from a dream in which I had a lovely discussion about the state of the world’s economy over tea and biscuits with a toucan and an owl. Yes, it was one of those dreams. It just goes to show, however, that ideas for great shoots can literally come from anywhere, and we just have to alert enough to notice.

Rhea Clements: AW12

Earlier this month I was fortunate enough to work with the very talented Rhea Clements. Rhea is a Nottingham-based jewellery and accessories designer who specialises in knitwear. She asked me to photograph her gorgeous latest collection for her (I was especially fond of the necklace above… I may have to treat myself), ready for autumn, and of course, I was happy to oblige. After some discussion, we established that she wished for a theme of ‘war paint’ and warriors.

The makeup involved was really quite extraordinary, and required two hours of work from both a makeup artist and body paint artist, collaborating together. I dread to think just how much black body paint was used to achieve this look. It was all worth it, as the look gave the final images a really edgy, powerful look to them, which, luckily, Rhea loved.
