Emmys 2014

Let’s face it, who doesn’t love to watch to see who’s wearing who and who looks great and who looks… not so great, at each red carpet event? There are certain big star events that will always be top of the list, such as the Oscars and the BAFTAS, but when it comes to TV, it’s the Emmys. As ever, I found myself caring more about the beautiful dresses than the wins. Not that I was entirely oblivious – I just don’t watch all that much TV. I was especially chuffed (is that not the most English word ever?) to hear about Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, and Jim Parsons’ wins (though as for the latter, how many consecutive years has he won an Emmy for best comedy actor now? Six? It’s a wonder they bother going through the nominations at all anymore!)

But anyway, I’m here to talk about the fashion, you’re here to see the fashion… here are a few (slight under-exaggeration) favourites from last night.

Allison Williams in Giambattista Valli Couture

My love affair with the colour yellow continues, it seems. For such a dramatic dress, it’s really so simple; the yellow sash is the final touch that brings it all together and ups the drama by about 1000000000x. Very elegant but fun… I can’t help but see it as a modern take on a Grace Kelly design? Does anyone else see that?

betsy brandt

Betsy Brandt in Olivia & Alice

This dress should be too much, but it works so well. The blue/purple shoes are also a great choice – it can be tricky deciding on a shoe to go with such a canvas of colour as this, and I think most would have made the mistake of black or white… or red. I have such a clear image in mind as to how I would wear this dress; I’d wear it with a simple, fitted black jumper, a white bead collar necklace, and black suede kitten heels (yes, I know that I just stated that Brandt teaming black pumps with this dress would have been a mistake but just go with it…). It would look amazing.

Heidi Klum in Zac Posen

Even though I doubt I could really pull off this colour, this is probably the dress from last night that I would love to see in my wardrobe most! In fact, no, forget it being in my wardrobe! This is the dress that I would most love to see on me… but you know, in pretty much any other colour but this one. It just wouldn’t work. On Heidi, however… wow.

zoe deschanel

Zooey Deschanel, channeling Marilyn-meets Audrey in Oscar de la Renta. I know it’s not the first time, but I still can’t get over just how different she looks without her fringe/bangs. She looks beautiful, but… ordinary, and then suddenly, the bangs are back and it’s such a ‘wow’ look in comparison. I’ve never seen so much power held in one fringe before.

And the ones that missed a beat for me:

img-kellyosbourneemmyawards_17464921878.jpg_gallery_max

Kelly Osbourne in Honor

Very few people can pull of this hair colour as well as Kelly Osbourne, and I love that she frequently incorporates similar violet-grey tones in her wardrobe, while the rest of us are still thinking about what works with our hair. Red heads should avoid pink (though I think The Little Mermaid proved that rule to be completely unnecessary), and stick with blues and greens, brunettes look great in any colour, and no one works pinks and reds better than blonds, etc etc. However, here, there’s too much lace. When your hairstyle is so out there, you should tone down the embellishments to an absolute minimum. Perhaps this would work on the right celebrity… but even then, I think a bodice would look much better, rather than this high necked, 3/4 sleeved top.

 sarah-paulson-emmy-awards_19533533763.jpg_gallery_max

Sarah Paulson in Armani Privé

The 1980s were a well known disaster, and it scares me how revived it has become in recent months on our runways. The spotted, tulle prom dresses were among the worst, and to see that one has managed to reemerge like this… do people never learn?

 julianna-margulies-emmy-awards_193955200174.jpg_gallery_max

Julianna Margulies in Narciso Rodriguez

I’ve seen dresses like this hanging in numerous charity shops; ill fitting, cheap fabrics, causing general confusion among staff and customers as to whether it ought to be displayed in the dress section, or the nightwear section. As for the visible bra straps at the back, it just makes the whole look tacky.

 lena-dunham-emmy-awards_193956554365.jpg_gallery_max

Lena Dunham in Giambattista Valli

There are no words. I get that Lena Dunham is a big deal, especially in America, I get that everyone adores her for challenging celebrity stereotypes, especially regarding the ideal female figure, and good for her – so she should… there are too many dieting sheep in Hollywood, all conforming to the same rules, all fighting to look just the same as each other. She’s talented, she’s gorgeous, she’s humble and intelligent. However… far too often she just gets it so, so wrong, and this one is a doozy. The hair and eyebrow contrast, The weird grown-out bowl cut, the tattoo, and not to mention, that dress… which, by the way, looks amazing on the runway. Here, however, it’s frumpy, ill-fitting, unflattering, contrasts horrendously with that over-bleached ‘do, and basically gives her the appearance of someone who’s attending a halloween party dressed as an animated Pixar character… the story of a workaholic bird of prey, or something. I’m getting a bit bored of seeing her frumpy red carpet fashion again and again, if I’m honest. I’m just going to focus instead on her talents: acting, screenwriting, directing, producing… please, can someone take over her wardrobe, because Lena Dunham does not have a talent for fashion.

Mayim Bialik in Oliver Tolentino

Mayim Bialik wrote for her official blog over at Kveller.com that she hoped that this year’s Emmy dress balances between ‘hot and holy’… while it’s not a bad dress, and I admire her for her strict rules on modesty in a world so set on showing as much skin as possible to gain attention, it just doesn’t… quite work. I feel like there’s too much lace (I’m sensing a pattern among the fashion police victims this year), which makes the whole thing too fussy, and tied in with that neckline, it’s all just too much.. way too much. The colour looks amazing on her though. Had she opted for satin, or something sleek, then I think it would have worked. I’d also love to see her with a sheer bateau neckline and sleeves, but would that be sticking with her modesty rule? Or is sheer fabric out?

(*Update, having just found this dress, I can confirm that she looks great with sheer sleeves and a wider neckline. She. Looks. Amazing.)

katherine heigl

Katherine Heigl

I don’t know who Heigl is wearing here, and I have very little to say, except that it’s just too.. old.. too motherly.. too matronly. Much better things could have been made from this fabric.

Oscars 2014 Fashion

Firstly, I think it’s sucky that the Oscars are not aired live in the UK – unless you have Sky. Maybe the feed could be found somewhere, buried in the deepest depths of the internet, but unfortunately my hours of searching brought me nothing.

So instead, I’ve had to turn to Vogue Online again. I won’t lie, I don’t pay too much attention to who won what Oscar (frankly, the various voters have made too many questionable choices over the years for me to trust their judgement). For me, it’s all about who wore what. I think that’s the most important part of the Oscars to most of us, really – the fashion. All images are sourced from Vogue.co.uk and eonline.com

The Best 10

Lupita Nyong’o’s Prada dress was made especially for her, teamed with Fred Leighton headband and jewellery. Most photos that I have seen of her in this dress involve her swishing it, and I can’t blame her – I would be doing exactly the same were this my dress – it just looks so amazing!

Show us a twirl: Lupia seemed particularly pleased with her gown, which she revealed had been made especially for her

I’ve seen this Gucci dress on a few ‘worst dressed’ lists because of the ‘armory’ detailing, but personally I love it. It’s a gorgeous touch of detail on a classically cut dress.

Cate Blanchett’s Armani Privé dress actually took a while to grow on me. Or rather, the dress of 90% instantly gorgeous – the sheer, uber pale, colour-match fabric. It was the embellishments that took some getting used to. It needs something of course, otherwise it would have just looked… ‘is she wearing a dress or just foundation with a skirt?’ blandness. There’s just something about these particular… what are they, exactly? Pearly, flat, round… coins? Discs? They just remind me a little too much of barnacles and other weird anthropods and mussels and… sea stuff. I think I’m probably the only person in the world who sees that though, so let’s just ignore that weird little comparison. I do, however, love the sleeves.

Worst Dressed

This could have been a great dress – Giambattista Valli – if Penelope Cruz had just ditched the weird drapey shoulder scarf thing. Though I’m not keen on the pastel, faded-bubblegum colour, either.

A bit too 2001 glitz rather than 2014 Gatsby.

Wacky wallpaper: Zooey Deschanel donned a very busy floral and polka dot strapless number to the Vanity Fair party (left), and Nikki Reed looked ready for bed in her bathrobe-style boho gown (right)

Lace overload: Fashion darlings Karolina Kurkova (left, in Elie Saab at Elton John's viewing party) and Diane Kruger (right, in Valentino at the Vanity Fair after party) both opted for over-the-top lace looks

Bin bag dress, anyone?

Disney Media co-chair Anne Sweeney. wore an oddly structured blue Armani Prive dress, which opened at the waist to reveal a bright red silk accent

The ‘Almost There’s…

This Vera Wang dress just doesn’t quite… work. The fabric looks a bit cheap, a bit too t-shirt-y.

Lady Gaga, Oscars 2014

Chuck the chiffon around-the-neck wrap, and the ugly Gaga shoes (yes, I am aware that Gaga is not Gaga without Gaga shoes), and it’s a yes. The dress – Lorraine Schwartz – is beautiful. I’m not a Gaga fan, but all in all, she looks much better than when she wears her usual crazy outfits.

If it weren’t for the weird thigh-split detailing on the skirt (and that random layer of fabric above her leg), this J Mendel dress would be a yes for me.

And the ones that I HATE…

Jennifer Lopez Golden Globes 2013

1. At first when I saw Jennifer Lopez’ dress, I was amazed, not because of the dress itself as such, but more just because I was thinking ‘wow, is she even wearing anything from the knees up, or did she just hire a body artist?!’ but then this thought trickled away and I actually looked at the dress itself… I am all for the whole ‘if you’ve got it, flaunt it’ trend, but there is a fine line between sexy flaunting and downright slutty…. I mean, I know there’s nude fabric protecting Ms Lopez’ modesty, its not just 100% lace, but still…. jeez.

Rachel Weisz Golden Globes 2013

2. I was so disappointed when I saw Rachel Weisz’ dress. I love her! She’s beautiful, she’s an amazing actress – have you not seen The Constant Gardener?! But this…? Damn it Rachel!

Sienna Miller Golden Globes 2013

3. Another big disappointment. I always look to Sienna Miller when I can’t quite decide what to wear or I’m stuck in a bit of a fashion rut… this dress was a bad choice 😦 I just don’t get it, it’s silly, its fussy, it looks like something my five year old sister would design… just no.

Lucy Lu Golden Globes 2013

4. At first, I put this Carolina Herrera dress straight into the Worst Dressed category . but it’s growing on me. I can’t decide if its because I’m starting to like the dress itself, or because it reminds me of a typical Tim Walker Vogue spread and therefore I, being a huge Tim Walker fan, want to photograph this dress! However, I do love how Lucy Liu has teamed it with a yellow clutch bag and casual fishtail braid! I never did master those damn fishtail braids before I decided to cut off all of my hair!

Lena Dunham Golden Globes 2013

5. Lena Dunham in Zac Posen….. love the dress… but not on her. It just doesn’t suit her, in my opinion… though the chocolate hue definitely does!

Kerry Washington Golden Globes 2013

6. Kerry Washington… nooooo. It’s just such a bizarre dress… Miu Miu, lovely colour, but I don’t understand this whole short under-dress, long sheer over-skirt thing – just as with Rachel Weisz’ dress. That’s a really strange trend for me, and I’ll be glad when it’s over!

Julianne Moore Golden Globes 2013

7. Julianne Moore is wearing a custom made Tom Ford dress… I love the dress, and I love Julianne Moore, but not together. I don’t think she has a defined enough waist to pull this off, and while I’m guessing the monochrome waist detail is supposed to bring in her waist, it just doesn’t… However, I do love the back of the dress!

Halle Berry Golden Globes 2013

8. Halle Berry.. I’m torn about this Versace gown.. the one shoulder look really suits her, in fact the entire dress from the waist up suits her, and I love the sheer fabric detail on the shoulder, but the cut out bodice is a mess :/ and it’s just too.. busy.

Giuliana Rancic Golden Globes 2013

9. Giuliana Rancic’s dress would be great for a Vogue Halloween party, but it’s just too gothic and cold for something like the Golden Globes. And it would have looked better had it actually been an off-the-shoulder dress, rather than having the weird nude-coloured fabric over her shoulders.

Jessica Chastain Golden Globes 2013

10. Finally… Jessica Chastain in Calvin Klein… the colour really suits her amazing hair colour.. buttttt.. the horrible baggy top of the dress really ruins her boobs!

More Lovelies…

1. Nicole Richie in Naeem Khan. I love her blue eyeshadow. I love the colour of this dress; I think the colour stops all of the embellishments that cover every inch of fabric from becoming glitzy and OTT. So demure and lovely.

Michelle Dockery Golden Globes 2012

2. Michelle Dockery in Alexandre Vaultheir. Definitely my second favourite dress of them all, after Kate Hudson’s amazing McQueen dress. Her figure is amazing, and is really has to be to pull off something as fitted as this! Love the gold detail and the high neckline. Love, love, love. ♥

Anne Hathaway Golden Globes 2013

3. Anne Hathaway. Now that her hair has grown a bit, it really suits her. And I keep hearing people say that she should carry on regaining the weight that she lost.. she always looked great, but personally I think she looks just as amazing when she’s this thin too! She’s wearing Chanel Couture, and she just looks so lovely and angelic and delicate.

Jessica Alba Golden Globes 2013

4. Jessica Alba. I’ve never been a big fan on top-to-toe coral or peach but it really suits her. Oscar de la Renta. Love the style and shape of the skirt. However… the orange lipstick teamed with coral is a bit predictable, and I hate the weird, fluffy handbag. I’m sure I had something like that in my dressing up box when I was a child…

Salma Hayek Golden Globes 2013

5. How incredible if Salma Hayek’s figure! Apparently she considers herself ‘short and chubby’, so I’ve decided, she must be insane to think that of herself. The bow at her hipbone really draws the eye to those amazing curves…. what else need be said? ♥

Megan Fox Golden Globes 2013

6. Megan Fox. Dolce & Gabbana, teamed with a pair of Jimmy Choo’s, Lorraine Schwartz jewels and a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch bag. She looks so angelic!

Award Shows always bring out the ‘OTT fashionista’ in me, and I thought (with some encouragement…. no…. nagging from my lovely fashion-obsessed girlies), as I tend to spend hours after every big event like the Golden Globes talking about what every wore, I may as well post it on my blog.

I love looking at all of the beautiful dresses, and raising a brow at the fashion faux pas. If only it was acceptable to walk around in evening gowns like those seen at the Oscars and Golden Globes without people accusing me of insanity…

Those that I LOVE

Heidi Klum Golden Globes 2012

1. I love Heidi Klum’s dress; from Alexandre Vauthier’s Fall 2012 Couture Collection. Worn with Louboutin ‘Un Bout’ pumps and Lorraine Schwartz jewels…. exactly how it was worn on the catwalk, in fact. She looks like a goddess! With some vintage hollywood glamour thrown in there, with her hair styled into lovely golden curls. Wow.

Naomi Watts Golden Globes 2012

2. Naomi Watts is another lovely who cannot do wrong in my eyes (I like to pretend that the little fashion fiasco of the 25th Annual Israeli Film Festival didn’t happen!). I need this dress. I don’t know when I would ever get to wear it… but its just lovely. I love the colour, I love that it’s backless and elegant and demure. I love that its a Zac Posen dress – I’ve loved him ever since I first watched the Sex and The City movie! I would have probably added a tinnnyyy bit of matching plum red lip gloss, but nothing as heavy as matte lipstick, but there you go.

Kate Hudston Golden Globes 2013

3. Kate Hudson. This is quite possibly my favourite dress of them all! It’s McQueen (Sarah Burton), and I just love the neck detail – the basic style and cut of this dress is really classic, but the neck detail just makes it like.. wow. Someone buy me this dress please? It’ll only be… about several grand….

Nicole Kidman Golden Globes 2013

4. Nicole Kidman. More Alexander McQueen!!! Yay 😀 The stud detail around the neckline is very McQueen, but not in a ‘oh when are they going to get over that and move on?’ kind of way – and her hair is the perfect length for that. In fact that’s one thing about Kate Hudson’s dress; as much as her hair is great down, it hide the detail around the collar! The sheer midriff is amazing, and of course she has the figure to pull it off. Note to the chavs who I often see lingering outside of Derby’s Mcdonalds in size 18+ crop tops, no, you cannot pull this off… and please stop wearing crop tops!

Golden Globes 2013

5. I’ve seen this in four or five people’s ‘worst dressed’ blogs.. but I like it :/ It’s a Halston gown too, so not as insanely, bank-busting expensive as all of the McQueens and de la Renta’s.. I can’t understand why so many people don’t like it!

Helen Mirren Golden Globes 2013

6. Honestly I think Helen Mirren is my ultimate beauty/fashion idol – in a ‘i hope I look that good when I’m in my 60’s’ kind of way, rather than a ‘I want to look/dress like her right now in 2013’ kind of way, of course! Stunning, stunning, stunning. Badgley Mischka, I love you ♥

Sally Field Golden Globes 2013

7. Sally Field is another gem who looks amazing for a woman in her mid-sixties! I swear celebrities are a whole different species!! They just never age!! I think this dress was custom made by her.. I’m not sure, so I’ve heard, but it definitely looks perfect on her! The colour, the cut, everything! It’s Alberta Ferretti. Love.

Sofia Vergara Golden Globes 2013

8. Sofia Vergara, of Modern Family. Unfortunately couldn’t find out who designed this dress, but I love it. So elegant! And luckily there was no wardrobe malfunction like the huge fiasco of the Emmy 2012 awards that she shared all over her twitter page!

Kelly Osbourne Golden Globes 2013

9. Kelly Osbourne. I never would have thought that the purple rinse would have worked… and at first I really hated it, but it’s since grown on me and quite frankly, she looks amazing! The purple really goes well with the colour of her dress, which is also by the lovely Zac Posen. In some shots that I’ve seen, it looks more of a cream/very pale green, but going from this shot, I love the sea foam/pale duck egg blue – probably my favourite colour at the moment!

Taylor Swift Golden Globes 2013

10. My, my… did you see her face when Adele won? She reminded me of that scene in Mean Girls, you know, to your face its: ‘oh my god your skirt is so cute, where did you get it?’, and behind your back, ‘that’s the ugliest skirt I’ve ever seen’. I don’t think Miss Swift is used to losing. And personally I’m so glad that Adele won! As for her dress.. Donna Karen, so elegant, love the colour, shame about the visible stick on bra in some shots…
