If Only: Outfit of the Day 46#

I’m a few years behind everyone else, I know, but today I came across the ‘No More Page Three‘ campaign. For those of you who are unaware, Page Three is a controversial daily feature in The Sun newspaper, each day printing a photograph of a topless glamour model across the entire page. It’s something that I have never understood, especially in this day and age. Surely we should have moved forwards by now? Though I think such a campaign should be weary not to inadvertently rouse the pro-page3 squad into action to save their beloved daily… well, it’s basically soft porn, really, isn’t it? Let’s face it, there is no other reason to pose topless shots in a newspaper than for men to gawp at and teenage boys to… hide in their bed sheets. They are not artistically shot, and so cannot be described as art, naked models means that they cannot be classed as fashion, there is not cultural positive to them… I see no place for them within any newspaper.

I’m getting carried away… my point is, what better way to wear a campaign t-shirt than with a leather skirt and chunky shoes? Yes, that was my point, honest.

If Only: Outfit of the Day 33#

Maybe it’s because it’s September, maybe because it’s school season, and I suddenly find myself once again wondering whether I am invisible to anyone under the age of sixteen as children leave school on their scooters, ramming the front wheel into my ankle, running their bikes over my toes, headbutting me in the thigh, their screeches of laughter and shouts to each other ringing through my ears, disturbing what was just a week ago a very peaceful route through the quiet residential streets of my neighbourhood. Maybe it’s the first crisp, falling leaves of autumn, but there is definitely an element of back-to-school chic intertwined with an autumnal colour scheme for today’s look. Slightly-clashing patterns, block colours, lashings of accessories and a hit of grown up lace lingerie peaking through a shirt… yes.. I like this one very much.

It started with a swimsuit… as a keen swimmer, I’m always looking for that perfect swim suit, and this one is my perfect swimsuit; cut out, florals, flattering cut.. it’s the whole package for me, if I’m honest. I’d wear it as a bodysuit as well as a swimsuit, and the best part is, it’s less than £100… teamed with aztec prints, ruby shades, a statement necklace and a few designer pieces, and I’m all set for a stroll through Hampstead Heath on a lazy sunday afternoon for a swim in the lakes… let’s not mention the required post-swim top and just focus on the swimsuit, shall we?

Give me drama today – in the best possible way – in my wardrobe. So often, I’ve pined over the beautiful gowns that hit the runways and red carpets, but of course, when would I wear them? Well sometimes, I think I’d just head straight out on my daily errands in a big, puffy ball-skirt or a dressed down gown. Why not? It’d be such a waste, otherwise. This Alberta Ferretti maxi skirt is the perfect example of wearable drama – being a skirt, it can be teamed with something casual; a crop top, a tucked-in slogan t-shirt, a boyfriend-fit jumper or a leather jacket. It hangs just high enough off the ground not to be ruined by the grime of the city streets.

With the hat, the wide-leg trousers, the heels, I guess today’s look has some strong 70s vibes. With a murky colour pallet ad that pop of blue, it’s a very autumnal look, simple, understated, but edgy all the same.

If Only: Outfit of the Day 19#

For all of my styling experiments, this outfit, here, is my ultimate style; this is when I am at my most comfortable, and my most confident, when the clothes I’m wearing become less of a statement and more simply, like a second skin. I’m all for monochrome and neutrals, modern twists on classic silhouettes, vintage influences and elegant simplicity. Yes, it is very modern Audrey Hepburn, isn’t it? I blame all of those old Hollywood movies over the years…

AW14: How to wear… Folk Fairy Chic

You don’t have to look hard at this season’s runways to the heavily layered influences of folk and fairy tales. From romantically dark, Grimms brother-esque graphics to sheer, floating florals, woodland decals and Germanic prints, all __ atop a deep pallet of emeralds, navy’s, rubies and deep golds. This trend compliments the overruling trend of statement coats, capes and ponchos perfectly, combining to create a romantic, whimsical look which will send us all harking back to those childhood days of playing make-believe as our favourite fairy tale characters.

To recreate this look this winter, opt for keeping warm with thick tights, rather than packing away your dresses and skirts; have you ever seen a fairy tale princess in trousers, after all? As the air chills, swap light, floating fabrics for thicker fabrics like velvet, wool or flannel; brocade, embroidery and gemstone shades are all in. Team with leather accessories, and keep yourself snug in a thigh-skimming cape. If you find one with a hood, even better, but if not, pinning a fur collar will complete the look.

folk3

If you’re a fashion minimalist and so not a fan of the woodland-animal themed motifs and extravagant florals that have flocked to the runway, you can still inject some folk influences into your look. Stick with block colours as your base; such as this dress or this skirt and top combination, teamed with folk tale themed jewellery such as this or this and a laser-cut leather handbag, such as here or here. Keep yourself with a blanket cardigan such as this or this coat, while this scarf would look great tied in a bow around the handle of a leather tote. A cute pair of leather boots, and of course, don’t forget those thick winter tights (or socks, if you’re feel you can brave the icy winds), and your look is complete.
